Circa 1817 mansion with amazing gardens and ornamental fish pond

Built in 1817, this gorgeous, Federal home wows at every turn. Situated in one of Washington, D.C.’s most prestigious neighborhoods, the stylish West Village of Georgetown, this home is walking distance to all of the shopping, dining and nightlife that Georgetown offers.

The property, located at 3327 N Street, N.W., is listed by Margaret Heimbold, a Realtor, GRI with Long & Foster | Christie’s International Real Estate’s Georgetown office, and is being offered for $6.5 million. Elegantly renovated and meticulously maintained, the over 7,000-square-foot home has five bedrooms, six full and three half bathrooms, and the home’s façade is registered by the Foundation for the Preservation of Historic Georgetown.

“This home provides sumptuous living in a serene setting,” said Heimbold. “Take advantage of the rare opportunity to own this historic home and be prepared to entertain in grand style – from lavish dinner parties in the dining room to cocktail parties in the garden. This home offers everything for people who live life to the fullest.”

The home was built by Colonel John Cox, a successful merchant and real estate owner, who also served as mayor of Georgetown from 1823 to 1845. Married three times to women of prominence, he earned the rank of Colonel in the War of 1812. Cox built five homes in Georgetown, one for himself and the others for his sons, all next door to each other. The five Federal homes, all with flat fronts, large windows, exquisite dormers and decorative swags, became known as “Cox’s Row.”

Entering the home through the stately front door, you arrive in a unique vestibule on the reception level. Stepping into the foyer, you see the breathtaking double parlor. This 40-foot by 14-foot room has two fireplaces with Egyptian marble mantles and two sparkling Tiffany chandeliers. You’ll greet your guests in style in this room with its tall ceilings, plenty of natural light, oak with a band of walnut floors and exquisite thick moldings, which were custom-made to match the home’s original millwork.

For quiet time or to work from home, retreat to the paneled library with built-in bookcases and a fireplace. Serve drinks before dinner in the convenient wet bar found on this level beside the library. Take one of two staircases or the elevator, with silk walls, to the next level. The elevator doors open to an elegant dining room, where your dinner parties and family celebrations will be remembered beside the fireplace, under a gorgeous crystal chandelier.

The kitchen brings a pleasant element of surprise. This sleek, modern, visually amazing room will appeal to the foodie in everyone, as well as a professional chef. The kitchen is so spacious that your catering team will easily be able to prepare a meal for a crowd. With beautiful white Italian Snaidero cabinets, and a six-burner Miele cooktop, the well-equipped kitchen also includes two of everything – sinks, refrigerators, dishwashers and wall ovens.

Gleaming tile floors from a renovation of the White House in the 1800s are featured in the garden room. This room has a wall of glass that overlooks the beautifully landscaped garden. Resembling a well-manicured English garden, this large private outdoor area is surrounded by brick walls and includes an ornamental goldfish pond.

Upstairs, you’ll find an expansive owner’s suite with a fireplace, two walk-in closets and two bathrooms. Enjoy morning coffee on the gorgeous terrace that connects to the owner’s suite. On this level, you’ll also find a service kitchen. The next level up includes two comfortable ensuite bedrooms. The top floor features two additional ensuite bedrooms, which would also be ideal as an art or yoga studio, office or playroom. All floors on these levels are heart-of-pine.

Noted for its beauty inside and out, this home has been part of Georgetown’s Historic House and Garden Tours. A few of the many other features of this home include sought-after garage parking for four cars plus two additional parking spaces, a wine cellar and service entrance.
