10 Hot Trends for Bathrooms in 2018

February 15, 2018

Whether you’re planning to renovate your master bathroom or shopping for a new home with a brand-new bath, you can find inspiration from the trends showcased at the annual Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS).

Presented by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show highlights the latest styles and designs, and these are a few of the popular trends in bathrooms.

Similar to kitchen design trends, transitional and contemporary styles are more popular than traditional-style bathrooms.

Wood cabinets, painted walls, barn doors and brushed nickel fixtures are all popular features for today’s homebuyers.

Ninety-one percent of professional designers say quartz is the most popular countertop material, with granite and marble distant followers, according to NKBA’s 2017 Kitchen & Bath Design Trends Report.

Porcelain tile floors are the most popular option by far, followed by ceramic tile and stone.

While vessel sinks were still on display at the industry show, undermount sinks are far more popular.

While oversized showers with multiple showerheads are an important feature in nearly every new home, freestanding tubs have made inroads into master bathrooms with enough floor space to handle these architectural jewels. These soaking tubs have a sculptural quality and have become the focal point for many master bathrooms.

Along with the freestanding tub, steam showers, which offer a spa-like ambiance without requiring additional floor space in the bathroom, are becoming more popular.

Bathrooms also follow the color scheme of kitchens, with white and gray considered trendy, followed distantly by blue. Wallpaper with bold, large-scale patterns, has also returned to the bathroom for an updated look.

Lighting takes center stage in many bathrooms for safety and ease; LED lights have pushed shower lights to the front of the line when it comes to lighting trends, followed by recessed fixtures and sconces.

Technology has yet to change much in bathrooms: according to the NKBA’s report, just 23 percent of homeowners have installed a wall-mounted flat screen TV in their bathroom, while 16 percent have their bathroom lights controls connected to their mobile device and 14 percent have music in their shower. Nonetheless, smart toilets with digital controls and digitally controlled showers are appearing more often in upscale bathrooms.
