McGrath Real Estate Services, a Long & Foster company, joined forces with the Foreign Service Youth Foundation (FSYF) by sponsoring its annual essay contest. The FSYF is a nonprofit dedicated to helping the children of employees with U.S. Foreign Affairs Agencies, teaching them how to adjust to new and changing environments as they move around the world.

Six winners were selected in the contest—three middle school and three high school students. They were honored at ceremony in July 2018 and they received cash prizes, which were made possible through McGrath Real Estate Services’ sponsorship.

Through the essay contest, students are encouraged to enhance their communication skills by challenging their creative-thought process and exercising their writing skills. The contest is open to children of U.S. Foreign Affairs agency officials who are living both domestically and abroad. Many students worldwide participate in the contest each year, and it is part of the FSYF’s overall mission to encourage Foreign Service children to “embrace the adventure: encouraging resilience, fostering camaraderie and celebrating achievements.”

McGrath Real Estate Services is a property management firm in Herndon, Virginia, that is part of Long & Foster Property Management, one of the nation’s largest single-family property management firms. The McGrath family, which founded McGrath Real Estate Services, worked in foreign service, and that experience led the business to supporting other families and individuals working in foreign affairs. McGrath Real Estate Services has long provided property management services to Foreign Service employees, and they have sponsored the FSYF essay contest since 2010.
