The world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, Marquis Who’s Who selects leaders of American society who are influencing the nation’s development. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have excelled in their field for at least 20 years. Steorts earned the award for being a leader in the fields of business, government, media, and real estate. She was selected based on position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence.
Steorts is a member of the Board of Directors of Virginia Realtors and was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors (NVAR) and is a former member of the NVAR Board of Directors. Steorts was selected by the president of the National Association of Realtors as a member of their National Public Policy Committee, the Land Use and Environmental Rights Committee, and the Communication Committee.
An expert and advocate of consumer product safety, Steorts has received countless awards for her work. A former chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, a few of her many accomplishments during her time there included informing consumers on the selection of safe toys through National Toy Safety campaigns and placing more than two million smoke detectors in low-income homes, which she initiated along with ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets, home inspections, and re-calls of thousands of dangerous products.
The author of three books on consumer product safety, Steorts has also spoken extensively throughout the world on safety and regulatory issues, standards, women’s issues, and partnerships between the public and private sector. During her illustrious career, Steorts also worked in multiple key roles in the administration of five United States presidents.
Internationally, she has served as the official U.S. Representative to committees on Standards, Public Health, Women’s Issues, and Entrepreneurs around the world. She has given keynote speeches in Russia, United Kingdom, Spain, Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, Mexico, Jordan, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Ukraine, Canada, and the United States.
When she was president of the Dallas Citizens Council, a preeminent organization of CEOs in both the public and private sector, she worked closely with HRH Prince Charles of the United Kingdom on a very important program focused on minority economic development, which she initiated with the Dallas Citizens Council.
Steorts has served on many public and private sector boards of directors including the Council of the Better Business Bureau, American National Standards Institute, Executive Women in Government, Women’s Institute of American University, Foreign Service Public Members Association, National Industrial Defense Association, Homeland Security Association, Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, and Syracuse University National Alumnae Association Board.
Her corporate boards have included Coors National Advisory Board, and Mission Management and Trust in Tucson. Syracuse University honors have included the George P. Arents Award, the highest Alumnae Award, the Selleck Award as most outstanding graduate of the class. While attending Syracuse University, Steorts was president of the College of Human Development and class officer of junior and senior class.
