Indoor air filtration systems among many upgrades to home priced at about $2.2 million
A light-filled Colonial Revival mansion on a quiet country lane in Clifton, Virginia, has everything you need for privacy and comfort not far from the city. And the systems running behind the scenes add even more to this home’s unique appeal.
Starting with the exterior, 13101 Loth Lorian Drive, offered at just under $2.2 million, is a picture-perfect, three-story, brick house with another level below-grade. A double staircase leads to a welcoming front door and two-story Palladian window, which floods the first-floor and central staircase inside with sunlight.
The entry hall and great room of the home are illuminated by two grand chandeliers, plus another one in the adjacent dining room that sparkles with a multitude of large Swarovski crystals. The home has seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two half-baths. A second two-story Palladian window opposite the one on the façade allows for panoramic views of the swimming pool and surrounding woodlands.
“It’s a great effect when you go into the house and the chandeliers are on,” said Michael Abidin, an ear, nose and throat surgeon who bought the property in 2006. “This is a perfect house for entertaining. You can have 150 people here, and no one is crowded.”
Abidin made a few changes after he purchased the property from a long-time Long & Foster executive who had it built in the early 1990s. (Some have noticed a resemblance between the home and Long & Foster’s Chantilly, Virginia, headquarters, which is also designed after homes built during the Colonial era.)
Abidin added a three-car garage with an au-pair suite, blending it seamlessly with the existing architecture. Other enhancements can’t be seen but perhaps are detected in the air. Abidin purchased a system that brings in outdoor air, pushes it through filters, and exchanges it with stale indoor air.
“It keeps the dust down, and the air is clean, so your upper respiratory tract doesn’t take a beating,” Abidin said. “People walk into the house and start looking around, because the air is so fresh. It’s just as clean as most operating rooms I’ve been in.”
Other improvements included four steam humidifiers, a whole-house vacuum system, two tankless gas water heaters, and extra attic insulation. The home also has two enterprise-level wifi hotspots and a firewall, to aid with conducting business securely over the internet from home.
Additionally, Abidin installed a whole-house generator that can power the entire property including the pool, along with a battery backup that can run the house for 24 hours if the main system fails.
Situated 28 miles west of Washington, D.C., on five acres, the property has ample outdoor entertaining space. Two large decks and a screened gazebo overlook the pool, which is surrounded by terraced landscaping and a brick patio. An elevator makes it easy to transport refreshments and accoutrements for entertaining from the kitchen to the lower-level pool and patio.
