May Home Maintenance Checklist

May 1, 2019

May is a transitional month from spring to summer. It’s between the unpredictable spring weather and the summer months ahead. With Mother’s Day and Memorial Day coming up this month, it’s the time to focus on getting your outdoor spaces ready for entertaining or just relaxing on the back porch.  From fertilizing your lawn to cleaning your grill, here are seven items to check off your to-do list, so you’ll be ready to enjoy the warmer weather.

Fertilize your lawn: Check for bare spots or damaged grass. Make sure you use the correct amount of fertilizer and don’t forget to water.

Check outdoor lighting: Clean dirt and insects that have accumulated on lights over the winter. Additionally, replace bulbs if necessary so that they’ll be ready to show off your beautiful yard.

Wash windows. Clear dirt, grime and pollen from the inside and outside of windows. Take an extra moment to wipe window frames and sills.

Reseal exterior woodwork: Extend the life of decks, fences, railings and other outdoor wooden structures by resealing them every year or two.

Work on curb appeal: Place flowers in planters on your front porch for a welcoming look. Prune bushes and trees to make your home look neat and clean.

Set up outdoor furniture. Bring furniture out of storage, dust it off and go shopping for new pieces as needed.

Clean your grill: Scrape grates with a grill brush to help it work more efficiently and prevent flare-ups. Wipe down the grill using diluted vinegar to help cut through grease without using chemical cleaners. Check gas grill fuel lines for cracks. Organize your grilling tools and purchase charcoal or propane, if needed.

If you’re planning to sell your home during this season, you’ll want to make sure it’s ready. Talk to your real estate agent about any other suggestions or maintenance tips they may have that will help to make your home an attractive and a special place to be acquired.
