A Feast for the Senses: Luxury Homes Magazine Looks at Opera in the Mid-Atlantic Region

November 9, 2018

One of the great things about living in the Mid-Atlantic region is the abundance of cultural opportunities in every city. And among the finest of fine arts available for residents and visitors to enjoy is the opera.

The winter issue of Luxury Homes magazine, the flagship publication of Long & Foster | Christie’s luxury marketing programs, looks at three East Coast/Mid-Atlantic opera companies and the state of the art form as it faces increasing competition for audiences’ attention.

The Washington National Opera, Opera Philadelphia and Virginia Opera are three companies offering grand opera performances throughout the season, which extends from fall through spring. All three companies have grappled with finding ways to continue to mint new fans, and some of their tactics might surprise you.

In Philadelphia, that meant adding a festival and non-traditional performances that mashed up opera classics with unexpected other forms of art – for example a drag performance and a concert that mixed painting and music.

The Virginia Opera created a series of newer performances called Variations, featuring shorter new works and up-and-coming performers. And under new leadership, the Kennedy Center’s WNO is increasing its efforts to engage the community, for example with a discussion planned at the end of the season tying Tosca to the #MeToo movement.
