1908 home epitomizes Edwardian elegance

Long & Foster® Real Estate, Inc., the largest independent residential real estate company in the United States, and a leader in the sale of luxury properties, today announced it has listed a unique historic property, rich with details, featuring six bedrooms, and five and a half bathrooms. Located at 2220 Monument Avenue, the home is in the Fan District of Richmond, Va. The home is exclusively listed by Jolanda Knezevich, a sales associate with Long & Foster’s Strawberry Street office in Richmond, Va., and is being offered for $1.529 million.

“This stunning historic home is also known as The Binswanger House, as the home was designed by architect Claude K. Howell for Harry S. Binswanger, who owned a prominent Richmond glass company,” said Knezevich. “The home features many ornate, distinguished details, including skillfully rendered plaster, a variety of intricately patterned, polished wood floors, as well as masterful stained-glass work.”

Built in 1908, the façade of the home was designed in a fashionable Italian Renaissance Revival style with Colonial Revival accents. The front of the home has a striking portico with fluted Corinthian columns and pilasters, and a balustrade terrace extends across the front of the façade. The floor of the terrace and portico features multi-colored tile work with a Greek key border. The roof of the portico doubles as a balcony accessible by French doors.

The first-floor living areas of the home are elegant, spacious, functional and ideal for entertaining. Spaces include a reception hall and living room, a stair hall and dining room, as well as a great room and study. The home’s staircase has been referred to by local historians as, “one of the chief architectural glories of the house,” and features stained-glass windows depicting blooming wisteria and iris.

The living room of the home includes a three-part picture window that overlooks the front terrace and historic Monument Avenue, as well as beautiful parquet wood floors and dentil crown molding. Sliding pocket doors lead to the reception hall and dining room, which extends the full width of the house with one wall enhanced with a richly polished fireplace mantle. The fireplace has a white ceramic tile surround, and is flanked by sunny window seats.

The doors to the study feature abstract, geometric patterns in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the interior includes built-in bookshelves, a corner mantel, and a stained-glass window depicting cherry blossoms that serves as a partition between the study and the great room. The eat-in kitchen of the home, located in the rear, is spacious and modern with lots of natural light, black granite countertops, a walk-in pantry, an island and a Victorian mantle.

The second and third floors of the home include the bedrooms and additional bathrooms, which have been updated and modernized while retaining as much of the home’s history as possible. The second floor includes a master bedroom and two fully renovated bathrooms, while the third floor includes additional bedrooms and a full bathroom. The home also features a guest suite with full bathroom, a modern, two-car garage and a recently added patio.
