October Home Maintenance Checklist

October 1, 2017

October is here and along with the cooler air and beautiful fall foliage, it won’t be long until the ghosts, goblins and ballerinas will be ringing your doorbell on Halloween night. Here are a few tips to make your home welcoming and safe before they arrive.

Clear yard and sidewalks: Take a look at your yard and walkways for potential hazards that could cause trick-or-treaters to trip and fall. Put away hoses, sprinklers, toys and other obstacles. If you have an irrigation system, turn it off in advance so that your lawn and sidewalk will be dry for visitors.

Increase lighting: Replace lightbulbs in outdoor lighting fixtures if needed. If you don’t have good exterior lighting, add a few battery-powered or solar lanterns along your walkway for good visibility.

Check railings and steps: Children and adults alike may need the support of sturdy railings to go up the steps to your front door. If you’ve been intending to fix that wobbly railing or loose step, now is the time to do it.

Test your doorbell: Make sure your doorbell works and replace or fix it before the festivities begin so that you don’t miss greeting your guests and handing out treats. Installing a video doorbell will allow you to see who is at the door as well as increase your home’s value.

Following these tips can give you peace of mind that you’ve made your home as safe as possible for your trick-or-treaters. Enjoy October!
